Pigmentation or Melasma (hyperpigmentation) is the excess production of the skin pigment melanin, appearing as localised patches on the cheeks, bridge of the nose, forehead, chin and upper lip, which are darker than the surrounding skin. The main causes are the hormonal changes in women, acne, ageing, sun damage, pregnancy and genetics inherited in a person. Although pigmentation and melasma may affect both men and women, the majority of those affected are women.
